Chapter Thirteen

The moon and stars shone high in the sky through a clear and crisp night as Abi and I carried in a couple pies from Toppings. I pretended to forget Ruad in the back seat, and the wolf called out, “Pup, do you really want your mate to lose a car door?”

Abi turned around and gave Ruad a look that said, “Excuse me?”

I laughed and pointed at my familiar.

“Haha, you got the evil stare.”

Ruad turned toward my girlfriend and said, “Consider that I do not fear your scowl. Now consider who would really be at fault for your vehicle damage, myself, or Aoife for leaving me in here.”

Now the evil stare turned toward me, sending a chill down my spine. Girlfriend or not, she’d murder me.

“I don’t like how quickly that shifted,” I muttered.

“Then I’d walk over and let your wolf out of my back seat before she does something to get you into trouble.”

Scooting backward, I reached over for the door handle and opened it. Ruad walked onto the grass and said, “Eh, she’s more my Pup than I am her wolf at this point.”

We walked toward the front door, and I rolled my eyes.

Abi and her mother lived in a two-bedroom townhouse in the west part of town, which had been growing like a weed because it was one of the more affordable areas to live in.

Their home was one of those long and skinny houses that had been built in the last few years as new neighborhoods sprang up almost overnight. Fayetteville continued to crawl out in every direction it could, absorbing what had once just been empty country. Some folks liked that and continued to move here.

Others, primarily families that had inherited their country plots from two or three generations, probably weren’t too interested in watching town (and higher property taxes) inching towards them. I’m guessing my pack would have been in the latter if they were still around today.

Fortunately for me, Fayetteville didn’t seem to be expanding southeast in any hurry. So my little greenhouse was probably safe.

We walked into the house, vinyl flooring under our feet. Abi shut the front door as soon as my familiar was inside. A gas fireplace in the living room greeted us to the left. Two little stockings were hung above it, one red and one green. Abi’s name was stitched into hers, while Jen was stitched into the other.

Jen was sitting in the living room on a blue couch watching a Law and Order rerun, her long braids tied back. She wore a red bathrobe, standard after 8:00 p.m. attire for her.

When Jen’s eyes spotted our pizza, she hopped up and walked into the entryway. Of course, she pretended to be more interested in me.

“Aoife! I’m glad to see you, honey,” she said, throwing her arms around me. “I was so sorry to hear about Barb behaving like she did. You didn’t deserve that.”

I smiled and returned the hug.

“Thanks, Jen.”

When we parted, she looked down at my familiar and said, “So you must be Ruad, the vermillion wolf.
